Adjust and Adapt

3 weeks out from Tarawera 100 miler and today I’ve got a 3 hour run. With wind chills in the minus 34 range, I will have to do my workout on the track and practice some of that mental toughness.

One of the things I love about ultra marathons is that we never know what is going to get thrown at us on race day and we have top adjust and adapt on the fly. The same holds true in life and this nasty weather is a good opportunity to practice adjusting and adapting.

Promise and Deliver

Promise and Deliver

Under promise. Over deliver.

I think we’ve all heard the adage. I’m much more a fan of the simple version. Promise and deliver.

I remember when I was in the mortgage business some 20 odd years ago, I asked the number one producer in the company if I could shadow him to learn how he did what he did.

I remember sitting with him for lunch that first day and asking What is it that you do differently that allows you to consistently be the number one guy in the company?

And his response kind of surprised me.

He said, You know what, Mike?

He says, I just do what I tell people I’m going to do.

If I tell them I’m going to call him back at 3:00 p.m. I call him back at 3:00 p.m., not 3:15 with some bullshit excuse about why I’m late.

And sometimes I think we overlook the simple things that make things better.

Alright my friend, as always, continue to make beautiful shit happen.

Have yourself a great day. Take care.

Don’t Compare Your Mile 1 To Someone Else’s Mile 99

Don't Compare Your Mile 1 To Someone else's Mile 99

Have you ever gone back and looked at the early work of somebody who you admire?

I remember when I first started podcasting. I was listening to a fellow by the name of Mitch Joel and I think he was on something like episode 468.

I thought, you know, I will never get to the level of competence that he’s at.

And then I went back and found episode one of his and realized. That I wasn’t that far off of where he started, and I found great comfort in knowing that even our heroes started from Ground Zero.

So just a thought I had on the treadmill and thought I would share with you.

Don’t compare your mile one with somebodies mile 99.

As always my friend continue to make beautiful shit happen!

How To Solve Problems Before They Happen

How to stop problems before they happen

You know, with over 20 years experience in business as a founder, a business leader, I’ve had to deal with my fair share of problems and challenges.

And I’ve got to tell you that the vast majority of those problems and challenges all stem back to the same thing, unmet expectations, whether we’re talking about customer complaints, whether we’re talking about staffing issues or even interpersonal relationships.

the vast majority of the problems and challenges that I’ve ran into over the years all stem back to unmet expectations that I don’t think that’s an area that we necessarily pay enough time and attention to.

So my question for you today is what do you do to set, manage and ultimately deliver on expectations in your life? Whether we’re talking business or personal alright my friend.
As always, continue to make beautiful shit happen.

Raising Boys: Let’s Get Physical

Raising Boys: Let's Get Physical!

When it comes to raising boys and helping them better connect with their emotions, there is a lot of value in getting physical. Boys sometimes have a hard time identifying what they are feeling emotionally.

Somatic markers are physical manifestations of emotions and are sometimes easier for boys to identify. When we teach them to practice the pause, then notice what is going on in their bodies it becomes much easier for them to then move that into identifying a feeling.

Raising Boys: Model The Way

Raising Boys: Model The Way

When it comes to raising boys into fine young men, there is no better guide than how we behave ourselves. If we want to raise compassionate, empathetic young men then we need to make sure we are practicing compassion and empathy when we are dealing with them.

This can be incredibly difficult when dealing with behaviors that challenge us. The thing to remember is these behaviors come from a place of emotion. They are trying to meet some need. As parents we have the opportunity to “practice the pause” and practice empathizing with that feeling.

When we focus on the feeling rather than the behavior we are much more likely to make favourable progress.

Are you present or are you present?

Are you really here?

In a podcast interview I did recently I talked a bit about parenting. I talked about how I was always physically present with my kids.

I did all the things a ‘good dad’ is supposed to do. I coached soccer, I attended recitals, school performances and all the parent teacher interviews.

And while I think for the most part I have been a very good father, when I reflect on how many times I may have been physically present without actually showing up it makes me a little bit sad.

It is important to recognize the difference between being physically present and fully showing up for those in our lives.

Creating Joy!

Creating Joy

Last night at our men’s group we talked about finding joy. We talked about the importance of taking a moment to find the joy in our lives.

Maybe more importantly we talked about where we can create joy in our lives. We talked about how simple it is to create joy in our lives and how we can do that.

One of the guys shared a story of a recent trip to the ocean where he slowed down long enough to just go play in the tide pools and revisit them with childlike wonder.

So my challenge for you today is to take a pause and look for an opportunity to create joy in your life. Maybe it is as simple as a silly morning dance party on your own!

Let me know!

Success Comes When…

Success Comes When...

It is so easy in this world that seems to value material things to get caught up in the race. Working hard to acquire all the ‘things’ that make us successful.

For years I chased all of the trappings of success. The fancy car, the house and even what I thought the world expected a ‘successful’ relationship to look like.

It wasn’t until I shifted my focus that I truly started to become happier. You see, the world can take away what you have in a heartbeat. What it can never take away is WHO you are.

So shift your focus from ‘Having More’ to ‘Becoming More’. I think you will be amazed at what starts to happen in your life.

You Can Do More Than You Know

You Are Stronger Than You Know

Last night I watched the conclusion of Big’s Back Yard Ultra. This is an incredible event where runners run a 4 mile loop over and over. They are required to be on the start line every hour and keep going until there is only one runner left.

This year the winner was Maggie Gutterl who ran 60 loops in 60 hours. My friend Dave Proctor was the third to last one out and ran 52 laps.

It just goes to show what human beings are capable of when we put our mind to it.

So my question today is “Where can you dig just a little bit deeper?” We tend to have more left in the tank than we are willing to admit.

Read Something That Challenges Your Beliefs

Consume Something That Challenges Your Beliefs

In a world full of algorithms that feed us content that constantly caters to our online behaviours it is easy to live in an echo chamber. We are continually served up data that reinforces what we think, believe and how we act.

It is important to find ways to actively look for and explore contrary opinions.

When we look at other points of view one of two things happen. Either we strengthen our resolve in our belief systems or we start to see them crumble.

I would suggest that either outcome is positive. So my question for you today is where can you consume something that challenges your belief systems.

Sometimes We Have To Do The Things We Least Desire….

Sometimes we have to do the things we least desire...

Some days we really do not feel like doing the things that we need to do. It is when we can get past that and act anyhow that growth truly comes.

Sometimes in order to become the man we are most meant to be we have to do the things we least desire.

Where can you push past your fear, anxiety or discomfort and do those things you know you most need to do?

Let me know what those things are for you.

With Awareness Comes Choice

With Awareness Comes Choice

I first heard this truism from Eckert Tolle. We can’t change what we can’t see.

As men we tend to get so busy in our lives that it is easy to miss out on full awareness. This is why it is so important for us to simply slow down, take a pause and notice what is happening around us.

Focus on Becoming More

Focus on Becoming More...

For many years I chased all of the ‘things’. I chased the material items. The fancy car (I bought a Porsche when I was 26), the oceanfront apartment, the 6 figure income and all the trappings.

What I eventually came to realize was that these things were not what actually brought any sense of peace or satisfaction.

The world can take away what you have, but it can never take away who you are.  So focus on becoming more rather than having more.

There is a real magic that happens when we make that shift. Have you made it yet?

As always, continue to make beautiful shit happen.
