Together we can change the world

When we first launched Project Pay it Forward my hope was that we would help inspire others to look for ways to make a difference in the world.  I have to tell you, what has actually happened has surprised me a little bit.  You see, while I am thrilled to see the many different initiatives that have arisen from the conversations in the group and I love the private messages from those that are too shy to share, what has really happened here is that this group has totally backfired on me.  I am the one that has become inspired.  I am the one who has started looking for new, innovative and larger ways to make an impact on the world.  Imagine that your mind has been released from your old way of thinking.  Imagine that there were no limits on what might be possible.  Imagine that you could in fact change the world.  It has been a startling revelation to see just how much change we can all make.  The world needs our help now more than ever.  The world needs us to work together to make a difference for those who cannot.

Project Pay it ForwardMonetary resources are only one aspect of change, and while often required, it is usually less about the dollars that will alter the fabric of society, and more about the ideas.  The innovations, the provocation and shift to our way of thinking that will truly make the world a better place.  The beauty of our connected world is that we now, more than ever, have the ability to share those ideas.  To collaborate on those ideas.  When I see what it is that we can do as a collective it gives me hope, it gets me excited and hell yeah, it inspires me to do what I can.  The greatest resource that you have to make an impact on this world is not your chequebook but rather your “thinkbox”.  Your brain.  Together we can make a substantial impact, together we can change the world.  More exciting than simply changing the world is the thought that we can change the world in a big way.  The premise behind Pay it Forward is the power of exponentiation.

“Exponentiation is a mathematical operation, written as bn, involving two numbers, the base b and the exponent (or power) n. When n is a positive integer, exponentiation corresponds to repeated multiplication of the base”

If you do a kind act that inspires others to do a kind act, the acts self multiply and become so much more than simply a single act in isolation.  Peter Diamandis wrote about the power of exponentiation in his book Bold.  Peter is the founder of the X-Prize that takes a dollar amount to incentivize others to strive to find a solution to a predetermined problem.  The person or group that gets closest to that solution then wins the monetary prize.  The effect of this is to leverage a fixed dollar amount (the prize) and multiply the impact it has.  For example if one were to put up $20,000 for a prize to be awarded to the group or individual that makes the most strides toward solving a specific problem then chances are you would attract multiple groups or individuals that would invest a certain amount of time, money and energy into solving that problem.  They would do this both for the sake of solving the problem as well as for the sake of winning the prize.  So theoretically if you had 100 groups each invest $2,000 in resources toward solving the problem in effect the original $20,000 has been succesfully leveraged to create $200,000 worth of movement on solving the problem.  A 10x return on the original investment.

Another example I have seen of leveraging talent to make an impact is through Enactus Canada.  Enactus is a global organization that supports student entrepreneurs in finding a way to make a sustainable impact in their community through their entrepreneurial efforts.  The organization runs regional student competitions on a variety of campuses around the country culminating in a national competition where one select group is then invited to compete on the global stage.  They compete within a global network of 36 countries for the coveted Enactus cup.  All in all 36 countries engage 1700+ university programs, over 70,000 students and 550 individual, corporate and organizational partners to make the world a better place.  This is a perfect example of leveraging entrepreneurial talent to make an exponential impact on the planet.

I believe that we can do the same.  Imagine what kind of impact you could make with the right collaboration and resources.  Imagine the lives that you could touch. Imagine how it would feel to know that you have done your part to evoke change in the world.  If you are here, if you are reading this it is because you are not one to stand by.  You are a game changer, you are a difference maker, you are the one that gets shit done and I have a challenge for you.

I am not sure how, I am not sure what, I am not even sure where but one thing I do know is that we will make a difference.  What if we had 20,000 people all working together to share inspiring stories, collaborate on meaningful ideas and collectively alter the course of humanity?  Lofty aspirations I know but as Paulo Coelho says in the Alchemist “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”  We don’t even need the entire universe, just our little corner of it.  My challenge to you is to grow our Project Pay it Forward Group.  My commitment to you is to put up a dollar for every member, new and existing, up to a maximum of $20,000.  Once we have achieved this milestone we will lean on the cumulative processing power of the collective mind to come up with both a method to leverage this money and also how to then spend it for the largest impact.
